Here is a post I made in January 2004:

Predictions
I am not a psychic but there are some things I want to make predictions about as I think about these things pretty often.

First, Ross and Rachel will be together when Friends ends. Even if they break up later we don't have to know about it : )

**I know it was pretty obvious they would have to be together as all the fans wanted it. So I was right. **

Piper and Leo on Charmed will also be together by the time this season ends. Why they had to break up is beyond me.

**I was right again :) **

Harry Potter will grow up, graduate Hogwarts, and will be offered the job of Defense Against the Dark Arts Teacher. He will be the only one to stay in the position more than a year. Also, Sirius is alive, just in another dimension maybe. And Ron will marry Hermione.

**So I was right about one thing. Can't win them all. Well, I guess I got more right. I said Harry would grow up, and he did. So 2 things right. **

Just a few thoughts rattling around in my head.

We have finished with week 2. William has homework this weekend. He is supposed to have a project ready on Monday on the topic "Heroes". He's been procrastinating, though, and it's not ready, so he has to work on it this weekend. I have to come up with a consequence if it's not done on Monday, though, just like if he was in school. We don't really do grades, so grades won't matter to him. He'll just move on to the next thing. The only thing right now that affects him is playing World of Warcraft. So I guess if the project isn't done, he won't be playing for a few days next week.

I have had to step back and reassess the goals for homeschooling. Right now, with him being in 7th grade, I know he doesn't have research and report skills that he will need in the future. That is why the research module has been added to language arts for this year and will be added in subsequent years as well until he has mastered research and reports.

The rest of the subjects are on track. He's doing very well now in math and is finally remembering multiplication tables! We should be set to finally continue on to division and hopefully be at grade level by the end of the school year.

Our homeschool group is beginning their new year of meetings on the 23rd. We'll be glad to get back into the swing of things with the group.

Next week dh and I will be off to camp. We're going to attend a 4-H training session for the shotgun competitions. William has wanted to be involved for a while so we're happy about starting this.

Over Labor Day weekend we will be indulging in another family vice - sci-fi! We will be at Dragon Con in Atlanta on Saturday & Sunday. Saturday will mostly be spent with William finding out about robots, attending the Mythbusters panel, and browsing the autograph tables and the exhibits. Sunday we'll be watching the robot battles and attending the Star Trek: TNG panel. That's the one I'm looking forward to attending. No, we will not be in costume, however I am thinking of buying some "Unsocialized Homeschooler" T-shirts to wear.

So that is our week. I hope everyone else is having a great week, whether you've started back to school or not.

Our first week is done. Everything went pretty much as scheduled with some fussing but not a lot. I stuck to my guns and was consistent. I think I may finally have the hang of this.

This is what we did this week.

Science, Lifepac. The topic is animals. So far William has read about whales, fish, reptiles, and mammals. He's beginning to learn about the classification systems.

Language Arts consists of 4 parts - research, reading, writing, and grammar. For research, the topic is heroes. We've discussed what makes a character a hero and what makes a story a heroic story. Next week William will start an outline based on the research he's done this week and begin work on a project to put it all together.

For reading, William is re-reading the Harry Potter books. He's almost finished with book 2.

For writing we are using Writing Skills, book 1. Based on a brainstorming exercise, William wrote a paragraph titled "How to Make a Sandwich 101". He wrote 2 revisions and a final paragraph he finished today.

For grammar we are using Daily Grams and still working through God's Gift of Language. I can't believe we bought that book when we began homeschooling and it's still not finished! Right now the focus is on common and proper nouns.

Math is still focusing on multiplication two days a week and then using Lifepacs the other 2 days (we school 4 days). He's making some progress already and is also beginning to add fractions.

Social Studies consists of reading Story of the Middle Ages two days a week and Heritage Studies Geography the other two days. He last read about King Alfred in England and the New England states in the U.S. He said he wants to visit New England for vacation and learn to snowboard.

We're using Mavis Beacon for typing. His speed has improved and he's up to 12 wpm.

He's also reading a Health book. So far he's studied human development and nutrition. He's said that it's kind of creepy reading about everything that goes on in our bodies every day.

For PE we have been bike riding weekly.

So that's our first week. Here's hoping that the next week will be just as smooth.

Our first day was Monday. It's gone pretty well so far. Here is a picture from day 1.



I didn't even notice William's dog Scrappy making that face until I saw the pic on the computer. He's really not a demon dog. He's quite nice.
